About Graham Clayden’s prints

Although most of my career was spent in medicine, I have always used wood as a source of relaxation and expression. Wood carving and sculpture has rather given way to more 2 dimensional image making as this has allowed me to experiment more with pattern and colour. Wood block printing had a major resurgence with the arts and crafts movement led by William Morris in the UK when most commercial block makers and printers were giving way to photography.

This website shows you the prints that I have been making and most are available to buy. I have grouped my prints for convenience and you can see these and some details about them by clicking the item in the menu.  I sell these to friends and at local art fairs but may be able to post them off if you would like to contact me via the Contact item in the menu or by clicking here. You can scroll through the Print Gallery also.

Wood cuts are made into the side grain of the wood and wood engraving is made on the end grain. Some prints are made from a single block and others from several. I use the reduction method most often; here the lightest colour or tone is printed where the least amount of wood has been cut out. Then more wood is removed and a darker colour printed and so on. There are as many blocks as there are colour (minus one as one block when first cut would give you a colour with white in the cut out region). Some prints have a single block and are hand coloured. Click here  to see a photos of the printmaking sequence.
